Mindful leadership: 5 Steps towards better decisions with more mindfulness

Mindful leaders not only make better decisions, but also achieve more sustainable outcomes. The world is constantly moving – especially at work, new emails, project and tasks come in non-stop. These circumstances cause a lot of stress and influence our ability to make good decisions. The secret is to find a moment of peace. But how do you become more mindful? Read more about the 5 steps that will guide you towards more mindfulness, and therefore, better decisions.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is defined as the quality of the human consciousness, which allows us to experience the present moment with no judgment. This quality is also gaining immense importance in the business world. As Frank Brück, trainer at ti communication explains, a good leader has the ability to question him/her, as well as a situation always anew and then adapts their behavior accordingly.

Some effects of mindfulness:

  • Clear understanding of your self
  • Discover inner resources and go beyond known limits
  • Inner peace
  • Being able to cope with change in better ways
  • Selfaccpetance
  • Develop impulse control
  • More balance and joy

Mindful Leadership - „The Evolutionary Leap towards a Flourishing Organization“

Frank Brück, co-author of “The Evolutionary Leap towards a Flourishing Organization”, says that the book shows how meditation not only benefits the individual development of the value system but also the personal stress reduction. In addition, he says that the book explains how meditation can be the foundation for organizational change processes that aim to become more sustainable.

The authors show, based on an understanding of neurology, as well as numerous sources explaining the effectiveness of mediation, how you cannot just flourish yourself, but also the organization your work for.

Through meditation at work…

  • The personal wellbeing benefits
  • The processes of organizational developments benefit
  • A new dimension of sustainability is created
  • The potential of individuals and organizations can be tapped in to
  • Leaders can make better decisions

The greatest challenge for leaders and the role of mindfulness

Frank Brück shares: „The pressure on leaders is ever increasing due to the high amounts of information that must be processed and the increasingly fast-paced business world. What is missing is time for reflection and new orientations based on the experiences made. This leads to the problem that actions, processes and organizational cultures are not questioned, slowly becoming dulled. In the long run, this leads to individual emptiness and collective feelings of organizational bluntness. As our neurological findings show, short meditation cycles can cause drastic, positive changes in the brain and therefore, in the entire body. In addition, an adaption of the personal value constructs towards a more social and ecological consciousness takes place. The recovered mental freshness causes many positive effects, which range from increased attention, better communication skills to more empathy.”

Mindfulness: 5 Steps towards better decisions

In this fast-paced world, it is not easy to stand still and pause. It takes practice, some tips and guidelines and most importantly: The will, to become more mindful. After the benefits of leading mindfulness have been demonstrated, you probably wonder, how you are supposed to find peace when the phone is constantly buzzing, when the to-do list only gets longer and the pressure is continuously increasing. Here are 5 steps that will bring you closer to mindfulness at work:

1. Changing perspectives

As Frank Brück mentioned, mental freshness also increases our ability to dive into the mindset of our employees. Empathy, the art the view the world from a news perspective, can be learned in role plays. Ask yourself:

• How do my employees feel about this decision?
• What wishes do they have towards me, as a good leader?
• Which goals do they aspire to achieve in this organisation?

Leading people successfully is a challenge. With more mindfulness and therefore increased levels of empathy, you don’t just support your personal well-being, but also that of your employees.

2. Mindfulness meditation

When was the last time, you took some time to do absolutely nothing? Only 10 Minutes…
In a TED Talk Andy Puddicombe argues that we don’t make enough time to take care of our own mind anymore. We are too busy, don’t have time and often lose ourselves in stress.
Meditation will change a lot:

3. Personal development

Mindfulness training = personal development. The Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBRT) and Mindfulness Bases Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) are becoming more popular: They help people in leadership positions to develop the following skills through mindfulness:

• Concentration and focus
• Creativity
• Mental flexibility
• Mindful communication
• Mindful attention allocation
• Reciliance
• Controlling emotions

4. Practicing gratitude

Practicing gratefulness makes us happy and happy people are successful people.
You can do the following things in order to practice gratitude regularly:

• Write own 3 things in the morning, that you are grateful for
• Take 5 minutes after work to reflect upon the day and focus on the positive events
• Grab a notebook in the evening and answer: What did you do for another person today? What are you proud of? Which situation filled you with the greatest joy?

If you need help, consider buying a Mindfulness Journal that serves as great inspiration.

5. Body Scan

A body scan describes the inner experiencing or scanning of the body. It is about focusing your attention on one part of the body, after another. This mindfulness exercise increases your body perception and also decreases overreactions to stressful situations at work.
