Description

The content listed below refers to a one-day face-to-face-training. In a two-hour webinar the topics will be treated in a shortened way. We ask for your understanding.

Intercultural Training: Time Management and Making Decisions Although time actually is a measurable value and should therefore objectively be the same in all countries, its perception is what differs most across cultures. Being “punctual” or being “late” can mean something completely different depending on the context in countries like Brazil, China, Egypt, Germany or Australia. The differences seem to be gigantic, especially between the German and Egyptian culture. Whilst Germans - according to their proverb "Nothing to postpone to to-morrow, what can be done today" regard time as rather finite, for Egyptians time can appear to be an infinite resource. Opposite time concepts can cause major challenges in an intercultural working environment and can be very frustrating for Westerners, particularly those used to get down to business quickly, setting and meeting tight deadlines.

Topics that the training addresses in more detail:

  • Intercultural strategies for linear as well as parallel time cultures and optimising the resource of time
  • Synergy effects through intercultural understanding of time
  • Relationships between efficient time management and the making of correct decisions
  • Intercultural risk assessment in decision making
  • The influence of cultural stereotypes on decision making processes
  • Using practical examples to analyse business critical incidents that have to be resolved with correct decisions

Benefits

This training is dedicated to raise awareness and understanding for the varied time concepts, how successful intercultural time management can look and the positive impact it can have on important and correct decision making.

Case Study

Mr. Abdel Shahid is working on a project that needs to be completed by end of next week. His German boss, Mr. Schneider, gives him a different task shortly before the end of the deadline and asks him if he could fit it in and still meet the agreed date. Mr. Abdel Shahid’s reply is “Yes, no problem”. However, the task appears quite labour-intensive and Mr Schneider has not informed his Egyptian colleague about which of the two tasks has priority as he expects from his employees to work independently. What could go wrong?
